Beyond the Screen: Empowering Thakurganj’s Girls Through Books and Health
We are incredibly excited to share a wonderful update regarding our KitabLok ("World of Books") initiative within the Thakurganj Tea Garden community. As we work to counter the alarming trend of the younger generation spending upwards of 7 hours a day on mindless mobile scrolling, KitabLok has emerged as a vital, holistic ecosystem for the youth.
We have successfully integrated free book reading, creative storytelling, and arts into their routine, providing a structural alternative that fosters critical thinking and imagination over passive screen time. Beyond academics and creativity, we have also taken a significant step toward community health and dignity. We are now actively conducting vital Menstrual Health and Hygiene Education sessions for young girls and providing free sanitary pads.
By combining literacy with health resources, we are breaking long-standing taboos, ensuring these girls can focus on their growth and education without interruption or shame. The response to this initiative has been absolutely overwhelming. We currently have a dedicated cohort of 25 adolescent girls who have joined the reading sessions, and many more are already on the waiting list eager to participate.
The incredible depth of thought and enthusiasm these girls bring proves that the desire for learning is massive; however, our current setup is quickly reaching its limits. To sustain this momentum and accommodate the growing demand, our immediate priority is to scale up.
In the coming days, we urgently need to enrich our library with a wider variety of books, introduce more structured creative activities, and secure a much larger physical space. We are deeply grateful for your continued guidance as we expand this model to empower even more young minds in Thakurganj.
